I’ve worked in Fortune 200 companies for over 20+ years. I often get asked the question, “how can I get that next job?”, “or I’d like a promotion, but there’s aren’t any open positions?” I have a new answer to this, and a new answer to anyone wondering where to start their journey of transformation to a better life, whether a relationship, career, education, health.
My tip is this: Be excellent at everything
My experience is that people want the end game, the end result, the job, the money, the house, the healthy body. It’s nice to know what you are aspiring towards AND it starts with excellence in the moment to what is right in front of you. You may feel like the cards are stacked against you. I get it, I’ve had my share of tough times. But if you start with a mindset of excellence to everything that is right in front of you, the magic starts to happen.
Be excellent at the next step, be excellent at loading the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, sending that e-mail, driving into the office, working on that project you may have thought is beneath you, seeing the opportunities to improve a process, taking initiative to share your idea, to smile in the hallway. Be excellent at every little detail, especially the ones that you may judge as not important or small. Be excellent at every detail that no one will see but you.
And here is what will happen, you will start a momentum of excellence. You will become a genius at something that may seem mundane, it will spark a new idea, open a new door, you will strengthen your muscle of expertise in a certain area, you will develop a new skill, you will make a difference in someone’s life who years later will network you to the perfect opportunity, you will be asked to be on the really important project because you have a track record of excellence on all your projects. You will have only excellent food in your fridge for excellent health, you will have excellent relationships because you’ve shared your excellence not your victim with others. Excellence begets excellence.
Then when that opportunity opens up, you are going to have such a brand of excellence, that there is no one else they even want to interview! You are the only one uniquely qualified because of your relentless commitment to excellence. Jobs, opportunities, networks, communities, like minded friends, health all expand and grow.
My son likes to say, “do everything in your control”, and that is what a commitment to excellence is. Stepping out of that victim role to what can I do with excellence in this moment to create a life that gets better and better. You can’t control anyone, you have total control over creating a life of excellence for yourself!
That’s how we do it, we shine the brightest light of excellence we possibly can. We say thank you for the mundane, the ordinary, the hard stuff, all of it. We say thank you to all the small opportunities to be excellent. We have faith that it all matters, it all counts. Thank you for this excellent opportunity uniquely preparing me for my greatness to expand. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Be excellent dear ones,
Jill
