I’ve got a big toe injury. I know, that doesn’t sound so serious, and I agree! It has provided me with some great insights on the topic of balance though, let me explain.
At yoga, balance poses are always challenging. But even more so when your big toe can’t quite grip the mat. My big toe injury is on the right foot. It’s like I can’t quite bend it and grip it like I like. So, when I stand on my right foot to move into dancing shiva, I’m wobbly. It’s so rewarding and fun to nail a dancing shiva. When you do, you are in strength of expression, standing tall and strong, it’s joyful for me.
So, what does this have to do with life? Here’s the lesson I’m learning. When one part of life is out of balance, even a little, life can get wobbly. Even slightly being out of balance in one life area impacts our strength, our expression, our joy in all areas of our life. Let me share some examples:
- Let’s say work has taken over, and you are stretching your hours to log back on after dinner and you put your kids to bed. Out of balance, and will probably impact your sleep, or quality of connection time with your partner, which will impact your joy and connection with family the next day if not longer.
- Or friends/relationships, when it’s out of balance, we miss time in deep, fulfilling connection. We may think we don’t have time for that dinner or walk with a friend. If we miss out on this, we miss our heart opening up in connection, which impacts the balance of joy and connectedness in life. We may feel depressed, disconnected, which can ripple all over.
- Relaxation and play. This one is hard for all of us these days! When do we give ourselves permission to disconnect, unplug? Downtime is so critical to insights, problems solved, solutions arriving. Without time for relaxation, play, downtime, we can feel stuck in a problem or challenge, over thinking, which can impact our quality of presence in all areas of our life.
Again, out of balance in just one area of life can cause us to be wobbly in other areas of our life. What do we do? One helpful exercise you may really like to assess your balance is a life wheel. I’ve attached one here: https://jilldianesaunders.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Life-Wheel.pdf What you do is fill in the different areas of your life on a pie piece, then color in your level of fullfillment and satisfaction in each life area. This exercise will give you a clue or snapshot to what is out of balance.
Then, with this insight, you can assess how to bring it back into balance. Remember action in one area impacts all areas. All areas work together to support our overall balance, fulfillment, and joy. Minor tweaks can create significant improvements in all areas of life.

Would you like help completing this exercise and strategizing? I’d love to help! Book some time with me. I’ll walk through completing the exercise in a short session, give you time to complete it, then we can take care of the big toe injury in your life that may be causing life to be a bit wobbly!
