Several weeks ago, I was visiting my nearby Kowalski’s. Kowalski’s is a Minneapolis cornerstone. Think destination for all things specialty related.
Kowalski’s often time shares samples, and on this day, I was honored to meet Steve Aspinwall from Velvet Bees Honey Butter who was sharing samples of his product.
Now, this honey butter is not to be missed, think creamy blend of golden honey and butter. It is so yummy and indulgent. You will never be the same. I often pick it up as a treat.
After meeting Steve, and hearing the story of Velvet Bees Honey Butter, I loved this product even more!
Here’s the story. Steve shared that he and his wife went through an unfortunate job loss, both at the same time. They hit the streets looking for new employment, and didn’t have any luck. Steve shared that his mother in law (I hope I have that right) suggested to them to start making the honey butter from her recipe, and sell it!
Steve and his wife brushed this idea off, kept hitting the job market, and still had no luck.
I’m not sure how long they resisted the coaching to start producing and marketing the honey butter, but after some time, they gave in! Steve shared they started selling initially at farmers markets, and it was such a hit, that they expanded to major, upscale grocery stores in the Twin Cities.
Velvet Bees Honey Butter is now a specialty brand that once tasted becomes a staple on your grocery run! (Link: Velvet Bees Honey Butter)
I’m sure there is more to this story, but this is what Steve shared as I inhaled the sample he was sharing!

Steve and his wife’s story has magic in it for me. How often when things get hard, do we put in the grind, muscle, and hard work to figure it out, what “should” we be doing. When, in these moments, maybe there is a better solution that looks untested, a little crazy, a choice of the heart?
Steve and his wife’s story inspire me to remember that the answers to the tough stuff may be right in front of us, if we can just give ourselves permission to see possibility.
Do you need some honey butter wisdom? Here’s some questions for you to consider:
- Is there a challenge or grind you are facing? Are you working hard to figure something out?
- What may be nudging you, circling you, saying – check this out, or consider this…
- How could you give yourself some regular downtime, to pause from thinking hard, and lean into possibilities that may be calling you? How could you give yourself time to listen the mild to wild possibilities? (Often times they are not loud or obvious)
- Then, what would it take to give yourself permission to explore a wild idea? How could you check it out? How could you learn more?
I love their story, it inspires me to consider mild to wild possibilities, I hope it does for you too!
Thank you, Steve for sharing your story with me! May you be blessed with great success.
